Two years ago the Community Service Scheme responded to a request to redecorate the hallway at Cumberland Street Day Centre. The hallway is fairly high and long and after the Community Service team finished the redecoration, it was suggested that something could be done to break up the large spaces.
At the same time the Criminal Justice Social Work service was trying to improve provision for women on Community Service and within the staff group was a woman who was an artist by occupation. Ideas started to form and after discussions with the Day Centre staff, it was agreed that a group of thirteen women offenders would paint a number of local scenes on boards which could then be hung in the hallway. The project proved to be a great success. As well as giving the Day Centre a makeover, the project has had a positive impact on the participants who have maintained supportive links with the Community Service supervisor and each other since they completed their orders. |
