A new Communicating Justice Coalition was launched in Edinburgh on 10 January 2012 by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. The Coalition aims to bring together all stakeholders with an interest in securing action on speech, language and communication (SLC) needs in Scotland’s criminal justice system. You can read the report of the Coalition's Inaugural Meeting here.
The Coalition’s work will include sharing best practice; seeking to influence policy-makers and service providers to improve access to SLC services across the criminal justice system; identifying improvements to current provision within current resources; and gathering evidence on the impact of improved speech, language and communication in relation to reducing offending and re-offending.
The second meeting of the Coalition was held in Glasgow on 28 February. The meeting focused on finalising (and starting to action) the Coalition’s workplan, which includes a communication programme with decision-makers and the public; further research on needs; a roll-out of resources (e.g. e-learning tools etc); and a number of longer-term developments.
South West Scotland CJA is a member of the new Coalition. To join the Coalition, or to be added to the mailing list, please contact RCSLT Scotland Officer, Kim Hartley,
