Literacy and Employability

South West Scotland CJA knows that having a job reduces the likelihood of reoffending by between 30% and 50%. However there are many barriers which may make it difficult for ex-offenders to find work. Many offenders were excluded or truanted from school and as a result have no educational or vocational skills, and low levels of self-confidence. Around 60% of offenders struggle with literacy and numeracy skills. South West Scotland CJA has set up a Literacies Group in partnership with local Adult Literacies Networks. The Group will develop a strategy to improve the literacy skills of offenders in custody and in the community. We are also working with Scottish Prison Service and other key agencies to develop a strategy to improve the employability of offenders in custody.
