Turnaround
South West Scotland CJA is working with North Strathclyde CJA and Turning Point Scotland to deliver the Turnaround Service.

Turnaround is a unique partnership between three national voluntary sector agencies (Turning Point Scotland, Apex Scotland and Venture Trust). Each agency has their own experience, skills and expertise to offer to service users.

Turnaround offers a holistic, person centred and needs led service. This approach helps people to consider their offending, its causes, the impact on victims and communities and to make plans for moving forward. It is based on the model successfully piloted in the 218 women's service in Glasgow city.

Turnaround focuses on young men aged 18-30 years whose offending is persistent, high volume, low tariff and who are failing in other community-based alternatives, or who have had multiple remand or short-term prison sentences. Individuals who may be vulnerable due to substance misuse, mental health issues, homelessness, lack of coping/social skills etc. are given priority. Referrals can come from the courts, criminal justice social work and the Scottish Prison Service.

Turnaround offers assessment, support planning, one-to-one and group interventions to service users within their own communities. Interventions include offender awareness, substance misuse programmes, anger management, parenting, social skills, confidence and esteem building, employability and life skills.

Turnaround works jointly with services in the community to meet the needs of service users. An opportunity for a period of safe supported accomodation for the most vunerable is also available.

Within South West Scotland there are community bases in Irvine and Kilmarnock which offer day services.

How Turnaround works

Turning Point Scotland carry out the initial assessment and support planning for service users. A duty team can respond quickly to court requests. The community-based teams support the offender through their individual support plan and work with with care managers, partners and other appropriate agencies. They will also offer the opportunity for supported accommodation for the most vulnerable or chaotic individuals at the earliest stage of service to give them a ‘safe' place to stabilise.

APEX Scotland provide a structured programme which increases employability, personal and team working skills, considers local labour markets, potential employers, and gives service users a personal understanding of the steps they need to take to move into employment, further education or training. The programme includes one to one work for specific, individualised employability work, goal setting, action planning and reviews. Presentations, talks and workshops are delivered on a group work basis.

Venture Trust offer service users the opportunity to take part in their ‘Chance for Change' programme. The programme consists of day-long training sessions held over two months followed by a 7-day expedition, a home visit, a post-course review and a follow-up at six months' post-course. The focus of the course is to develop life skills such as communication, planning and problem solving as well as personal and social skills, enabling service users to more confidently re-enter the community. It is designed to better equip the participants to deal with issues with through-care, employability and their family relationships, providing a strengthened position to reduce re-offending.
